Bonding Over Books
My boyfriend (now husband) Trey and I share a love for reading, and it has been one of the things that we have bonded over, especially recently. Around the beginning of the year, we both created lists of books we wanted to read which led to going book shopping online and in bookstores. Our book collections began to grow, and we quickly ran out of space to house them. (Check out some of my favorite books here and here.)
The Next Joanna Gaines
I decided this was a problem that needed to be fixed, and so I came up with the idea of creating a reading nook in his condo. He made it my mission (since I am the Joanna Gaines in the relationship, whereas he is Chip), and he gave me a budget of $100 to spend as I chose. I didn’t wait very long before diving right in! Decorating is something I have always loved, and I found that I enjoyed having a specific project to work on. I took the opportunity and ran with it…right to my Pinterest decorating board!
The Decorating Process
Thankfully he already had a chair and ottoman that fit perfectly in the corner I designated for the reading nook. All that was really needed was bookshelves (of course) and some sort of side table. First, he measured the wall and the space the table would go. Then, I started my research online, as I felt that would be the quickest way to find something…and cheapest. Believe me, I love shopping at HomeGoods, but I knew my budget wouldn’t quite fit there. I mainly searched Target, Walmart, At Home, and Amazon.
Even though I was the “designer”, it is his house so I wanted him to help pick both pieces out. I bookmarked everything I felt would fit well in the space. We spent an evening looking at picture after picture of bookshelves and side tables. At that time, we narrowed it down to 2-3 of each and revisited them at a later time. Thankfully, we were able to find shelves and a table that we both liked on Amazon!

My Own Chip Gaines
Both the book shelves and the table came in quickly (Thank you Amazon Prime!). He put the table together one afternoon while I wasn’t there, but he did wait on me before hanging the shelves. He arranged the books on the shelves himself, but I got to make them pretty! Like I mentioned, I’m more like Joanna and he’s more like Chip. (I did consult the people of the internet to get a little design help…thank you friends!)
The Finished Nook
Overall, I enjoyed the process of creating a reading nook in his (now our) home from start to finish. It is a space we both enjoy, as well as his two pups! I can’t wait for our next design project…maybe his office???

Job well done, Chip and Joanna!! 👍🏻
Thanks mom! You’ll have to come see it in person sometime soon
